A new puppy is a wonderful edition and are easy to take care of as long as you know what to expect ahead of time.
YOU MUST NEVER JUST CHANGE YOUR PUPPIES DIET, THIS MUST BE DONE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, THEY WILL BE SENT WITH FOOD SO PLEASE CARRY THIS ON, PUPPIES HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO DIE FROM A SIMPLE CHANGE OF FOOD.
NEVER ALLOW A PUPPY OUT AND ABOUT FOR WALKS UNTIL AT LEAST ONE WEEK AFTER ITS SECOND VACCINATION.
The first thing that is needed is for you to provide a safe environment for the puppy, remember puppies love to chew and get up to no good so all wires must be out of reach and make sure there is no gaps for them to get stuck, Puppy pens can be a great place for a new puppy, this should be a place where your puppy sleeps or is put in if you pop out for a hour or so, this is not a house so do not lock them away for long periods of time as this is cruelty.
Shih Tzu need lots of love and attention to truly thrive if you work all day and leave your puppy alone for long periods of time they may become depressed. If there cannot be someone at home with your dog a big stuffed animal can keep it company just get one without eyes or plastic parts on them as puppies love to chew and they could choke. Remember a Shih Tzu puppy is just like a baby they do not know any better until their brain starts to age and you're training kicks in along the way.
SHIH TZU PUPPIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME.
Allow your puppy chill out time, remember they are like babies and need to sleep a lot, please do not allow children to pester the life out of them, all play should be at floor level and they must never be picked up and carried round by small children as this is most unfair to the puppy....You should teach your children to respect them and not to treat them as toys.
Make sure you have plenty of rawhide bones around for during the teething stage as they tend to chew at wooden furniture, my puppies are given Eukanuba puppy chews as they are safe for them from the age of four weeks onwards. You can easily train them to stop this by introducing them to a toy or chew each time they start to go after the furniture reprimanding them with your voice firmly. Shih Tzu's are smart they learn fast.
Puppy pads are one way to train your new puppy from not peeing all over the house and on the rugs where permanent stench can ruin your fabrics, dogs are drawn to the puppy pads and you can train them to use them by putting them in the middle of the pad before they begin to wee you will know this because puppies tend to run around or go in circles just before they are about to do this. I find the best way is to start in the garden and train them to toilet outside as once puppy pads are used it's a difficult task getting them to toilet anywhere else.
Make any adjustments necessary to allow your puppy access to the garden, I always place a couple of blocks outside to lower my steps so new babies can manage them and also place a soft mat at the bottom of steps to soften the blow if they loose their footing.
Food should be free of preservatives, you can even make your own dog food consisting of 75 percent pure lean meats and 25 percent vegetables like peas, celery, carrots mixed in. My dogs love Pasta, twice a week I give this with veg and once a week they get meat with it like chicken and mince, just make sure they also eat their dry food every day for they will get their nutrition from that as well and it is good for their teeth.
One thing that seems to happen quite a lot is that the puppy wont eat so good in its new home, we have found that the problem is the bowl, most puppies are fed on flat trays to allow easy access and for the whole litter to feed on, please ensure that the bowl you use has a VERY shallow rim to allow them to eat easily, high rimmed bowls will cut into your puppies windpipe and there for put a puppy off eating so please check your bowls and if you cant find a shallow bowl then feed off a saucer.
